ARRAY@The Broad featured classic and contemporary films curated with an eye toward the intersection of art, history and cultural identity. With the cinematic image as the centerpiece, the series engages audiences through post-screening conversations with the filmmakers and a spectrum of artists and scholars for an immersive exchange of ideas and insights beyond the screen that enliven many issues addressed by artists in the Broad collection.
ARRAY@The Broad presented: Nothing But a Man (1964) followed by a post-screening dialogue with Michael Ealy, Ava DuVernay and Emayatzy Corninealdi; classic film Claudine (1974) followed by a post-screening dialogue with Diahann Carroll with Shaun Robinson; Cooley High (1960) followed by dynamic post-screening discussion with Cooley High actor Glynn Turman, director Michael Schultz, screenwriter Eric Monte, and rapper, actor, and film producer Common; Ousmane Sembène's Black Girl (1966) followed by a conversation with director Euzhan Palcy, actress Aisha Hinds, director and actress Salli Richardson-Whitfield, and actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell, moderated by journalist Britni Danielle; Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (2017) follow by a conversation with Ava DuVernay; Cheryl Dunye’s Watermelon Woman (1996) and C. Fitz’s Jewel’s Catch One (2016) with filmmakers in a conversation moderated by Dear White People creator Justin Simien; Bill Gunn’s Ganja and Hess and Hess with David Oyolewo and Rel Howery in-conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s Jamil Smith; Shirin Neshat’s Land of Dreams and Garrett Bradley’s America followed by a conversation with the artists; and Haile Gerima's Ashes and Embers (1982) followed by a post-screening conversation with celebrated auteur filmmaker Haile Gerima and award winning cinematographer Bradford Young.
